HISTORY

In Western North Carolina there is no shortage of mystique surrounding the distillation of spirits. Most stories revolve around the illicit production and distribution of fiery corn whiskey by poor but proud mountaineers. Striving souls battling poverty and existence in a rugged land.

Less is known about the medicinal aspect of the “ancient art of the hills”. The Blue Ridge was not only a difficult terrain but also a therapeutic landscape. Appalachia’s many micro-habitats are home to some 2,500 plant species, of which some 1,100 have been reported to have medicinal properties.* Spirits often provided the perfect way of extracting the healing qualities of these plants.

Eda Rhyne Distillery is using the flavors of these regional medicinals to craft interpretations of traditional herbal liquors and other fine spirits. Our Appalachian Fernet, Forrest Floor Amaro, Pinnix Gin and Herbal Rye uses folk knowledge passed down for generations to capture a unique terroir that honors the land and the people of Southern Appalachia.

About Eda Rhyne

Located in Asheville, NC, Eda Rhyne Distillery is dedicated to producing exceptional small batch spirits that capture the creative, hardworking spirit of Southern Appalachia. We source local heirloom corn and grains that give a uniquely North Carolina flavor to our whiskey.

We also use only responsibility harvested organic botanicals, some grown on Owner/Distiller Rett Murphy’s own Aardvark Farm, some wild crafted from the mountains surrounding Asheville.

By embracing this methodology Eda Rhyne Distillery creates hand crafted spirits that capture the unique regional flavors of Western North Carolina.

VISION

Eda Rhyne is dedicated to using innovation in distilling and farming techniques to help minimize our environmental impact. Our distilling system recycles all of our processed water and thermal heat. We also reuse our solid organic waste as fertilizer to grow the botanicals used in our distinct spirits.

Eda Rhyne’s White Dog Black Rye is an un-aged whiskey which captures the rich, nutty flavor of Seashore Black Rye. This unique heirloom grain was introduced to the United States in the 1830’s but by the beginning of the new century it had drifted into obscurity and was almost lost. As of 2016, it grew in perhaps as few as five farms in the South*. Eda Rhyne is proud to partner with the Carolina farmers that have kept this important grain alive and look forward to celebrating it’s much deserved resurgence. Try White Dog Black Rye and taste an almost forgotten American legacy.

Aromatic, delicious and warming, Eda Rhyne’s limited release Mountain Nocino is made from wildcrafted black walnuts from the forests of Western North Carolina and a blend of proprietary spices that capture the bittersweet flavor of this beloved Italian liqueur.

On a late spring morning in his cabin in Fairview, NC, owner/distiller Chris Bower said to himself, “I’m going to walk out of the back door, into the woods and make a fernet”. He spent the rest of the day harvesting roots, bark, leaves and flowers from the surrounding mountain side to create the rustic genesis of what is now Appalachian Fernet.

Eda Rhyne’s Pinnix Gin is named in honor of owner/distiller Rett Murphy’s great grandmother, Alma Pinnix, a brilliant business woman and avid gardener. Alma loved gardening so much that she outgrew her own property and soon started sowing seeds into unused public land around Greensboro, NC. She planted gardens along roadsides, abandoned buildings and forgotten spaces.

Pinnix Gin honors this legacy with bright, clean, botanical flavors that are easy to drink whether in the garden or in your favorite cocktail.

One of the first ideas brought to the table by owner/distiller Rett Murphy when Eda Rhyne Distillery was just a dream, our Herbal Rye continues to capture our imagination. In fact we are still trying to decide which of our favorite experiments we are going to use. It’s getting close!
